About & Methodology

LowCostClinics.org is a free directory that helps you find a nearby community health center — a clinic that will treat you whether or not you have insurance, and charge based on what you can afford. Every clinic we list comes straight from the U.S. government's own health-center data, so the core fact — "this clinic serves everyone" — is true for every listing.

Where our data comes from

Our listings are built from the HRSA Health Center Program dataset — the official record of federally funded community health center service-delivery sites, maintained by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As of our last refresh (2026-08-12), that's 18,284 active clinic sites across all 50 states, DC, and the territories. The data is public federal data with no usage restrictions.

Why every clinic here treats everyone

These aren't ordinary doctors' offices. Every site in the HRSA data is part of a Health Center funded under Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act. Federal law requires each one to:

So a clinic being in this directory is the evidence that it will see you uninsured or low-income — it's true by definition, not an estimate. That's why we can list it with confidence.

How we build and refresh the site

We download the HRSA file, keep only active service-delivery sites (dropping administrative and billing offices), and organize them by state, city, and individual clinic. HRSA refreshes its data frequently; we re-pull and rebuild on a regular schedule, and every page shows the "Data refreshed" date so you know how current it is. Clinics open, close, and move, so a listing is a strong signal — not a live guarantee. Always call ahead to confirm hours, services, and eligibility.

What we don't yet show — and what's next

The HRSA site-level file tells us where each clinic is, but not which specific services (dental, behavioral health, pharmacy) each individual site offers. So for now we describe the services community health centers commonly provide and tell you to call to confirm. Labeling dental and mental-health sites directly, using HRSA's service data, is on our roadmap.

Who reviews this

Content is maintained and reviewed by the LowCostClinics.org editorial team, which checks program facts (the sliding-fee scale, eligibility rules, poverty guidelines) against HRSA, CMS, and HHS sources and re-verifies them at least once a year. Feedback reports that flag a wrong or closed listing are treated as fact-check triggers.
